As a big fan of fiction books, it was my wish to read a
fantasy fiction book written by an Indian author. But, for many years that wish
of mine remained unrealized and unfulfilled. However, few months back out of
the blue, I happened to came across a book named ‘Immortals of Meluha’. And oh
dear! What a book written by author named Amish Tripathi.
The Immortals of Meluha is the first novel of the Shiva trilogy series by Amish
Tripathi. The story takes place in the imaginary land
of Meluha and how they are saved from their wars by
a nomad named Shiva. It begins with the Meluhan king Daksha inviting tribes to stay at his country, one of them being
Shiva's tribe. They soon come to recognize Shiva as their fabled savior called Neelkanth, after he devours Somras, a
legendary healing potion, which turns his throat blue. Shiva decides to help
the Meluhans in their war against the Chandravanshis, who had joined forces with a cursed
group called Nagas. However, in his journey and the
resulting fight that ensues, Shiva learns how his choices actually reflected
who he aspires to be, and how it led to dire consequences.
Writer Amish Tripathi, a finance professor graduated from IIM, has successfully
created a world and characters worthy of place in fantasy. Writing style
throughout the book is quite engrossing and story unfolds in such an
interesting way that reader would find it difficult to part away with the book
until he reaches the last page saying The End.
There is every ingredient in the book
to make it perfect mixture of entertainment. There is a secret of past life of
Shiva. There is a romance between Shiva and Sati. There is a action packed
scenes when Suryavanshis and Chandravanshis lock their horns with each other.
There are emotions, love, hatred, and what not. Language of book is slick and
simple. So it is warranted that you need not keep referring your dictionary time
and again.
So final word, this book is the best
fiction book by an Indian writer and a must read for every Indian who is a fan
of fantasy world. And it would be very unfair to compare it with western authors
and western fiction. Hence if you can try avoiding the comparison with the foreign
authors’ work, I bet you would enjoy this book to the fullest.
